Deaf Miss Texas Hit By Train

Miss Deaf Texas 2005 Tara Rose McAvoy, 18, was walking Monday
March 13, 2006, near railroad tracks when she was struck by a Union
Pacific train, authorities said. A witness told Austin television station
KTBC the train sounded its horn right up until the accident occurred.
McAvoy, who had been deaf since birth, won the state title in June
and represented the state "with dignity and pride," state
pageant director Laura Loeb-Hill told The Associated Press. McAvoy
was to represent Texas at the Miss Deaf America pageant this summer,
Loeb-Hill said.
McAvoy graduated last year from the Texas School for the Deaf, attended
Austin Community College and then started at Gallaudet University
in Washington, D.C., in January, but had returned to Texas, Loeb-Hill said.

Southeast Threshers Queen

Allison Cody has been crowned queen of the 33rd annual Southeast Old Threshers Reunion Festival. The pageant was slightly delayed due to rain as it is held in the outdoor Music Hall which has also played host to many well-known country music acts. Allison also won the Interview and Casual Wear competition. First runner-up was Candace Morris with second runner-up going to Dana Yates who in addition was voted Miss Photogenic and the Opening Costume winner. Julie Glover and Jennifer Gregson were among the five finalists. Other contestants were Amber Brown, Becci Clippinger, Carrie Crouse, Kelly Hurst, and Emily Smith. Outgoing 2002 SE Thresher's Queen Amy Whitmer was on hand to crown her successor.
