The National Sweetheart pageant took place over Labor Day weekend 2008 in Hoopeston, IL. There is never a reigining National Sweetheart as many have gone on to win their state the following year and a few have gone on to be Miss America. The new National Sweetheart 2008 is Rachelle Gurul, 23. Rachelle was first runner up at the Miss Arizona 2008 pageant. She was also a top ten semifinalist in 2007./ Rachelle is a vocalist and her platform is The Power of Mentorship: Building Tomorrow's Leaders. The first runner up was Miss Florida Kaitlin Monte, 19. She sang 'Astonishing'. The second runner up was Miss South Carolina Grace Wepner, 24. She played 'You Raise Me Up' on the harp. Third runner up ws Miss Nebraska Devin Howell, 19. She is played the piano. The fourth runner up was Miss Virginia Shannon Beam, vocal. The remaining semifinalists were: Miss Kentucky Lindsey Sheckles, Miss Utah Whitney Merrifield, Miss Tennessee Brooke Waddell-vocal (Prelim SS/Miss Congeniality), Miss Louisiana Jennifer Soileau, Miss Iowa Anne Langguth, and Miss Ohio Becky Minger. Eight contestants from National Sweetheart Pageant have gone on to become Miss America with five actually winning the Sweetheart title: 1970 Pam Eldred (Michigan); 1974 Rebecca King (Colorado); 1982 Grace Elizabeth Ward (Arkansas, Natl Sweetheart 1980); 1989 Debbye L. Turner (Missouri, Rep Arkansas - Natl Sweetheart 1988); 1992 Carolyn Sapp (Hawaii, Natl Sweetheart 1990); 1993 Leanza Cornett (Florida, Natl Sweetheart 1991); 1996 Tara Holland (Kansas, Rep Florida - National Sweetheart 1995); and 2002 Katie Harman (Oregon).
